If you are ready to make your estate plan, one of the choices you will need to make is who to appoint as executor. Many people just go for what they see as the easy option and ask someone close to them, such as a family member or good friend, who they are sure will say yes.
Yet, sometimes, it is better to search a little harder or risk asking someone who might turn you down. Here are reasons that someone who seems an easy option might not be an appropriate choice.
1. You don’t fully trust them
Let’s say you decide to ask your brother-in-law. They run their own company, which should mean they won’t find the financial side of things too taxing and must have fairly decent organizational skills. If, however, they have a reputation at the golf club as being a bit dodgy, then maybe it is better to pick someone else, as honesty is critical for this role
2. They’re older than you
It is often wiser to pick someone younger than you to act as your executor for the simple reason that there is a better chance they will outlive you and can fulfill the role.
3. They’re always busy
Maybe your younger sister would be ideal for the role in so many ways. Yet, if she is always run off her feet with her business and children, then it might be better to opt for someone else. While she may well make time to do it for you, stuff can easily get missed when an executor is juggling too many plates at once.
If you believe you have found someone suitable for the role and are happy to do it, then be sure you get it documented in your estate plan in the appropriate manner
