Being a working parent isn’t easy, but someone has to work to pay the bills. The situation can become even more complex if you’re going through a divorce because you’ll have to determine how you can balance your child’s needs with your career.

There are several things you need to think about as you’re trying to come up with a plan for what’s going to happen with the children. One of the most important things to remember is that the kids must come first. Every decision you make has to be based on what’s best for them.

Be realistic about your schedule

You’ll need to sit down with your work schedule and determine what an ideal child custody schedule will look like. Putting these together on the same calendar or planner can help you to see where there’s overlap or where you can make adjustments. Just be sure you’re being realistic about what you can do. It won’t do any good if you’re always stressed because you won’t be able to enjoy your time with the kids.

Rely on your support system

You should have a solid support system to help you with the children. These individuals might be able to help with tasks like picking the kids up from school or helping them with homework. The goal is for you to provide a stable environment for them, which can take a village.

Taking the time to get the child custody schedule and other points in place right when you go through the divorce is important. The parenting plan you establish should reflect everything you and your co-parent agreed on. It should be based on what the kids need now, and you can always modify the plan as their needs change in the future.
